both coasts? like east and west? i bet the west coast one may be about $500 and the east coast one will probably be double if not triple. seeing as how i've never done EITHER of them fully, my opinion on the matter may be irrelevant. HOWEVER, that sounds like a fun trip if i do say.
It cost Dave & I about $600 to drive from Utah to Boston. We tried to stay in the cheapest motel 6's or super 8's... you can usually find good deals. We also bought groceries & tried to eat pb&j's & such to cut down on eating out costs.
There are A LOT of toll roads on the East coast & that might make things pricey. However, your night stay in & meals in Boston will cost you $0, I know this great little B&B called El Theurer Tavern. I'll get you their number...
West coast is fun. If you do east coast that is fun as well. You will go through more cities on the east, so there will be less boring stretches of nothing-ness. Both are good options. If I had to pick one, I would go for the East coast! We actually debated about driving downt the East coast back in June and it didn't happen. :(
I personally think that the east coast has more historical things to see. I've done both (sorta) and think that the east is more exciting. Driving from like Boston down to South Carolina or all the way to Florida would be amazing!!!
Who knows about coast, but seriously...memories are pricesless!
The central coast in California is gorgeous. Think Highway 1, Big Sur. Soooo beautiful. If it helps with cost, consider your stay in San Jose on the way free. Just send me a facebook message. We have a couple of spare rooms and an air mattress.
